Cedar and arborvitae hedges are the backbone of most Surrey privacy screens, and they're unforgiving about bad pruning. Cutting back into bare older wood usually doesn't regrow, so we shape from the outside in and keep the foliage you actually need.

Timing your cut properly
Cedars respond best to pruning during active growth rather than in the middle of a hard frost, when cut tips can die back and leave brown patches that take a season to grow out.
As a general guide: light shaping through the growing season, a heavier tidy-up in late spring or early summer, and avoid hard pruning going into winter. Flowering shrubs are a separate case — prune them after bloom, not before, or you cut off the following year's flowers.
If you're planning to take a hedge down significantly in height, it's usually better done over more than one season so the plant isn't shocked.

Often yes, but it has to be done carefully. Cutting too far into the woody interior can leave a permanently bare side or top. We'll assess the hedge and tell you honestly how far it can safely come down, and whether it's better spread over two seasons.
